Lay of the Land – Maitland’s best Agritourism experiences

With its fertile lands nourished by the Hunter River, Maitland’s rich history of farming and agriculture continues to intrinsically shape the region today. Local farmers and producers proudly deliver an array of agritourism experiences that appeal to locals and visitors alike.

A feather in the cap for Maitland is the annual Tocal Field Days which have run for more than 40 years. The jam packed weekend brings together the very best of the region’s agribusinesses and farming lifestyle, with an impressive line up of exhibitors showcasing industry leading techniques and equipment. This year’s event will be held from 2-4 May, with tickets now available.

Carefully planned to deliver a fun and interactive event, there are plenty of demonstrations and hands on experiences for the whole family to enjoy. The wood chopping competition is always a crowd pleaser. The kids will love getting up close to the farm animals at the animal nursery, or jumping on an ever popular tractor or pony ride. Tap along to the live country music on the main stage, or try your hand at some country crafting in the dedicated tent. For the more gourmet inclined, sample artisan produce in the Good Food and Wine area, or feast in the Eat Street and Bar lane.

Luckily, you don’t have to wait until then to try the region’s outstanding seasonal produce. Maitland’s Earth Markets are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Levee in Central Maitland and provide the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the source. Chat with the region’s local farmers and boutique producers who are passionate about serving up quality produce that is sustainable and accessible to everyone in the local community.

On occasion, you can find Jesse and his team from Phoenix Park Farm at the markets selling their tasty organic produce grown in the nearby suburb of Phoenix Park, next to Morpeth. Jesse also leads hands on educational experiences for school groups and families, including his ‘Growing Future Farmers’ program. The equally passionate team at Purple Pear Farm in Anambah run tours to demonstrate the biodynamic and permaculture farming practices they have successfully implemented on their property since 2002.

Become truly immersed in your country surrounds and hit the road for the Maitland Countryside Drive, where the journey is the destination. This 40 minute route takes in sweeping views over picturesque farmland. Start in Lochinvar and look out for all the highlights along the way, such as the Luskintyre Bridge, which you may recognise from the Aussie movie favourite Tomorrow, When the War Began. Make a stop at Bolwarra Lookout, which frames a spectacular view across the countryside and city. End your scenic tour in the historic town of Morpeth, with plenty of cafés and restaurants, boutique shops and accommodation to explore.

An essential stop along the way is a visit to Tranquil Vale Vineyard in Luskintyre, Maitland’s one and only vineyard. This boutique winery is proudly family owned and is situated on lush lands alongside the Hunter River. Sample their highly awarded, estate-grown wines at the cellar door which opens from 10am-5pm daily. If the serene setting tempts you to linger longer, opt for a stay in one of their cottages and enjoy views over the vines from sunset to sunrise.

If a country weekender is exactly what the doctor ordered, the Hunter River Retreat offers spacious accommodation in rustic style cabins set on 110acres of private bushland. Venture to the great outdoors for a bush walk along the Hunter River and spot abundant local birds and wildlife, or make friends by feeding the resident farm animals, like the Scottish Highlander cows and miniature donkeys. Head further up the mountain to discover sunset views from a secluded picnic area.

Be it farming, fresh food or nature that spikes your interest, Maitland is a one stop destination for some of NSW’s best agritourism experiences. So dig out the Akubra and head to the heart of the Hunter Region to discover the lay of the land for yourself.
